Have fun as a volunteer at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics tournaments in the Gorge in December! The tournaments for youth ages 9 to 14 are one-day events planned for December 2 at Hood River Middle School and December 9 and 10 at The Dalles Middle School.
Volunteers with all backgrounds/ expertise are needed to serve, mostly as judges but also as referees and general volunteers. Online training will be provided to all volunteers prior to the events. High school student Jacob Field wants every student in The Columbia River Gorge to be able to build, program, and keep a robot. He is making this vision a reality with the Protobot Project taking place at St. Mary’s Academy later this month.
Protobots, designed by Field, are mini-robots with touch and light sensors that can navigate a maze, zip through an obstacle course, or repeat a pattern. “Imagine a little roomba with no vacuum. We are bringing Oregon Robotics Tournament and Outreach Program (ORTOP) back to the Gorge for our annual training for FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Coaches. This FREE one-day workshop will be Saturday, Sept 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Hood River Extension (2990 Experiment Station Dr, Hood River). The workshop includes:
- Introduction to FIRST LEGO League: Learn the basics of getting started in FIRST LEGO League, hands-on building an EV3 robot and learn some basic programming.
- Coaching and Mentoring Techniques: Focus on specific parts of the FIRST LEGO League program – Robot Game, Project and Core Values, best practices for being a coach/mentor, continue to learn to program using the EV3 robot.
- Robot Techniques: Focus on learning important programming and mechanical design techniques to teach skills to your team.
